Revisiting Babel through Gaza

Israels onslaught continues. Unashamdely, unabashedly, it continues its attempts to annihilate anything that breathes in Gaza.

The most recent news item from the ongoing genocide is the complete destruction of every university in Gaza. Not a single one left standing. Generations of minds that passed through those doors will no longer be able to proudly wave their own children or grandchildren off to their alma maters.

And of course this news was received by radio silence from Western academia; not a condemnation or boycott in sight. Its funny, Western academia seems to only have something to say about decolonisation when it’s theory, being able to analyse, comfortably, from their ivory towers. A reminder that revolution does not happen in the classroom.

But more specifically, I remember Babel. One of the most popular books in recent years, and rightfully so. The book highlights the way that academia can not only be complicit but a willing tool of empire. In light of everything that is happening in Gaza, I wanted to revisit some quotes that echo, so profoundly, the fight for Palestinian Liberation.
