I know no one asked, but here are some things that have been taking up space in my brain lately:

Choice as a Blessing:

So lately I’ve been thinking about the concept of free will and choice. Specifically, as a Muslim and where free will sits along the tightrope that is obedience on one end and freedom on the other. I’ve noticed how the word “choice” can have trailing behind it a pejorative connotation, in that it is a word that significantly informs liberal values. Choice, freedom etc etc. And I also think of how Islam is a way of life, of submission to God, where there are rules and regulations to fetter the fickleness that is the human being.

But where then lies one’s ability to make his or her own choices. I’ve been thinking about it specifically in the context of marriage and children, and it occurred to me that as Muslims, choice and free will, within the parameters set by our Creator, is not something to be afraid of as if it is something that puts you on a conveyer belt to secular liberalism. Rather free will and choice in and of itself is a blessing from Allah, in the same way Allah’s prohibitions are. Allah has allowed us choice in some areas of life, and in others, He has not.
