Notes on an American Execution

A growing village

It takes a village to raise a child. And now there is a newest member in mine. My son’s nursery teacher. My little man has finally settled into a nursery and he is particularly fond on one of his teachers; Sarah. He singles her out to say goodbye when time to leave, goes to her when he wants a cuddle and mentions her name at home.

Knowing that there is someone that my son feels warmth and connection from when I’m not there, that he looks forward to seeing everyday, makes me feel so incredibly grateful. That the person he has been entrusted with is honoring that trust and more. And honestly, my heart is full for that. I find so much beauty in the idea of my son’s village expanding. That the number of people helping nurture him is growing.

Because whilst living in the West might delude to think an individualistic, disconnected way of living is the norm, the reality is that such a way of life is unnatural and harmful. The need for the village will always remain, well beyond adulthood I would even argue. To guide, protect and support. And so what I’m trying to say, in a very long winded and dramatic way is; thank you Sarah.
